Dal fry is a popular Indian lentil recipe made with tur dal (pigeon pea lentils), onions, tomatoes and spices. Relish this delicious, mildly-spiced and creamy lentil dish with roti, naan or steamed rice. This dal fry recipe is more of a restaurant style version. Dal fry is made by soft cooking lentils in a pressure cooker or pot.

To begin with this recipe, we must first prepare a few ingredients. You can have dal fry using 20 ingredients and 7 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

The ingredients needed to make Dal Fry:
  1. Prepare For Daal
  2. Take 1/2 cup Tuvar dal
  3. Get 1/4 cup moong dal
  4. Make ready 1 inch ginger chopped
  5. Prepare 1/2 tsp garlic finely chopped
  6. Get 1 small size finely chopped onion
  7. Prepare 1 small finely chopped Tomato
  8. Take 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  9. Get 1 tsp kasmiri red chili powder
  10. Make ready 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  11. Take 1 green chilli
  12. Get to taste Salt
  13. Make ready 4 tbsp ghee
  14. Prepare For tempering
  15. Prepare 2 tbsp ghee
  16. Make ready 3 garlic cloves chopped
  17. Take 2 dry kasmiri red chili
  18. Get 1 pinch asafoetida
  19. Prepare 1/2 tsp kasmiri red chili powder
  20. Take 2 tsp Coriander leaves for garnish

To make the dal fry, I first boil the dal with turmeric and salt and then make the masala in a separate pan. Most of the flavor of this dal comes from using fresh onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic. So you don't need a ton of spices here. I have just used a bit of garam masala, chili powder and kasuri methi for that fragrance at the end.

Steps to make Dal Fry:
  1. Wash and soak the dal for overnight or at least 1 hrs. Then straining the water.
  2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker, add dal and roast for 2-3 minutes.add ginger, green chillies, red chili powder turmeric powder, pinch of salt. Mix well.add water cover and allow to cook for 3 whistle.
  3. Now heat a pan with 2 tbsp ghee add cumin seeds garlic onion and saute till translucent.then add chopped tomatoes and cook it for 2-3 minutes.add chili powder turmeric powder salt and mix well til the rawness of spices is gone.
  4. Add the boiled dal to this tempering and allow to cook for 3-4 minutes on low flame.
  5. Switch off the flame and add chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
  6. Now prepare the tempering. Heat 2 tbsp ghee add chopped garlic cloves, whole dry kasmiri red chili, kasmiri red chili powder, asafoetida and mix well.cook till it splitters.
  7. Pour the prepared dal into a serving dis and pour the prepared tempering and serve hot with white rice or roti.

So you don't need a ton of spices here. I have just used a bit of garam masala, chili powder and kasuri methi for that fragrance at the end. Dal fry and dal tadka are the two popular dal dishes that served in Punjabi restaurants. We order dal makhani very rarely because hubby likes this homemade one. Dear husband never gets satisfied by the taste of dal fry in Indian restaurants in the USA except for a few restaurants.
