Dal fry is a popular Indian lentil recipe made with tur dal (pigeon pea lentils), onions, tomatoes and spices. Relish this delicious, mildly-spiced and creamy lentil dish with roti, naan or steamed rice. This dal fry recipe is more of a restaurant style version. Dal fry is made by adding boiled and softened lentils (dal) to a seasoning of onion, tomato and spices which have been fried in ghee or oil.

The ingredients needed to make Daal fry:
  1. Make ready 1/2 cup Urad daal (with husk) soaked
  2. Make ready 1/2 cup Masoor daal (Soaked)
  3. Get 1/2 cup Moong daal (Soaked)
  4. Get 1 medium size Onion
  5. Make ready 1 medium sized Tomato
  6. Take 1 tbsp butter
  7. Prepare 2 tbsp Oil
  8. Take 1 tbsp heavy cream
  9. Take 4-5 pepper
  10. Get 3-4 cloves
  11. Make ready 1 tbsp Red chilli powder
  12. Get 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  13. Take 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
  14. Get 1/2 tsp coriander powder

The tempering or tadka takes it to another level altogether. You can use other dals like tur dal or masoor dal as well if you like. Dal fry is made by soft cooking lentils in a pressure cooker or pot. Then the whole spices, ginger, garlic, onions, tomatoes and spice powders are fried in the ghee and then added to the dal.

Steps to make Daal fry:
  1. Soak all the dals together.
  2. Finely Chop the onion and tomato. Keep crushed garlic ready. Take a pan and add oil. Once the oil is hot, add mustard, jeera, and asfoitida. Add onion.
  3. Add tomatoes and all masala. Cook on low flame for a while.
  4. Add soaked daals, add salt, and some water. Cover it and cook it on low flame. Once it is cooked, add heavy cream and serve with Roti or Kulcha.

Dal fry is made by soft cooking lentils in a pressure cooker or pot. Then the whole spices, ginger, garlic, onions, tomatoes and spice powders are fried in the ghee and then added to the dal. Hence it is known as DAL FRY. To make the dal fry, I first boil the dal with turmeric and salt and then make the masala in a separate pan. Most of the flavor of this dal comes from using fresh onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic.
