It is eaten with papadums in a large metal tray. Nepali Dal Bhat or Dahl Bhat, is a dish made of lentils and rice. It is considered to be the national dish of Nepal.

- Get 3/4 cup yellow split lentils (soaked overnight)
- Get 3/4 cup chopped coriander

In its simplest form, it is comfort food consisting of lentil soup (dal) and rice (bhat). Dal bhat is the traditional Nepali food of locals and trekkers in the Himalayas. On both of our Himalayan treks, Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Region, we ate dal bhat most days, either for lunch or dinner. Nepali Dal Bhat is the national dish of Nepal.
Instructions to make Nepali dal bhat:
- Soaked your lentil with water overnight (or until the lentil swell). By doing this, your lentils will cook faster. Drained the water before cooking.
- Heat oil on a sauce pan, add in garlic, ginger and onion. Saute until it became aromatic (onion looks soft).
- Add in lentils, water, tomatos, coriander and turmeric stir well. Let it simmer for 20-25 mins (until lentils are soft), season with salt.
- Taste your dal, adjust to your liking. Turned off the heat, your food is now ready to serve.
- Note: Nepali dal is runny, not thick like the typical Indian lentil curry.
On both of our Himalayan treks, Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Region, we ate dal bhat most days, either for lunch or dinner. Nepali Dal Bhat is the national dish of Nepal. It is simple everyday dal served with rice - a comforting and delicious dish to serve any time of the day. There is nothing more than comforting than a bowl of lentils aka dal with rice.
